Report: Former Derby County boss has plenty of interest but will seriously consider one Championship club

Former Derby County boss Frank Lampard is eyeing a shock return to Championship management this summer.

Frank Lampard, 45, has endured a mixed management career so far. Though his tenure with Derby County was arguably his most successful.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder was handed his managerial debut with the Rams in 2018 and in his first full season would guide the club to the Championship play-off final.

Memorably, Lampard’s Derby County knocked Manchester United out of the League Cup in the 2018/19 season, also overturning a 1-0 deficit to beat Leeds United 4-3 in the Championship play-off semi finals too.

But the Rams would lose to Aston Villa in the play-off final and Lampard would soon leave to take charge of Chelsea, with a stint as Everton boss since then.

Frank Lampard open for talks with Burnley

And now, more than one year after leaving Everton, Lampard could now be poised for a return to management with Burnley.

The Clarets recently lost Vincent Kompany who’s taken the head coach role at Bayern Munich, with Alan Nixon now reporting that Lampard is ‘open for talks’ with Burnley.

Nixon adds that Lampard also has ‘other interest’ but that he would ‘seriously consider’ becoming the next Burnley manager.

Lampard boasted a 42.1% win rate as Derby County manager, then 52.4% at Chelsea, but just 27.3% at Everton.

Overall, Lampard has overseen 196 games as a manager, with 81 wins leaving him with a 41.3% win rate.

Derby County could face Frank Lampard next season

Burnley will certainly be tipped for automatic promotion next season, and they’ll no doubt prove to be a difficult opponent for Derby County.

Paul Warne and his side will look to bring in the necessary quality needed to beat the drop, but it’s certainly going to be a testing summer with a lot of clubs already bringing in players.

The Rams need to act hastily if they want to sign their key targets, with names like Viktor Johansson having already slipped through their grasp.

And Lampard, should he take on the Burnley job, will want a positive summer too, and he’ll want to replicate his impressive stint with Derby County if he returns to the Championship.

He’s had a tough run in the Premier League but he succeeded beforehand in the Championship, so there’s reason to believe that Burnley and Lampard could be a good fit.

The Championship has changed dramatically since he was last in it, though, with the quality much higher and the competition much fiercer.
