Oclean may not be the biggest name in the world of electric toothbrushes, but its parent group is Xiaomi – a tech brand best known for undercutting the competition on price, while producing gadgets with great features.

The Oclean X Pro Digital sonic electric toothbrush lives up to that statement, to an extent. It’s got a killer battery life, a sleek design and some interesting features that can be tailored to suit your brushing preferences. However, there are drawbacks – read on to find out more.

Design & Build

The Oclean X Pro Digital has a high-end, premium look, making it a great addition to any bathroom.

The box includes one brush handle, one plaque control brush head with slightly harder bristles and a tongue scraper, one delicate clean brush head with softer and smaller bristles, a 2-in-1 mount holder and magnetic charging base, 1 USB cable and a user manual. My bundle also included a travel case with two spare brush heads, but this costs extra.

The toothbrush comes in four colour options: silver, gold, purple and blue. I tested the first, which has a nice shine to it. Replacement brush heads are available on the Oclean website although, at the time of writing, not every colourway is listed.

The toothbrush has an IPX7 waterproofing rating, so you can wash off any manky toothpaste stains without fear of breaking the device. The magnetic wall mount is welcome, as it helps keep the X Pro Digital cleaner for longer by being away from soap and water.

The 0.96-inch pill-shaped colour screen is navigated via swipes on the side of the handle, so you can cycle between the three pre-loaded modes. Then, click on the button below the display to start brushing. This display only activates when you pick up the brush, saving battery life.

The display has a countdown clock that begins when you activate a brushing mode, and a feedback screen that maps your brushing pattern. Like the Oral-B iO8, it vibrates every 30 seconds, which is a good prompt to move to a different part of your gob if you’re sleepy and not paying attention.

Battery life isn’t displayed on the brush as standard. Instead, the screen will flash and the brush will vibrate when it has under three brushing sessions remaining – although it can last longer than this.

I had one occasion where the brush kept on notifying me of a low battery after I’d finished, presumably because it wasn’t docked. This was annoying as I happened to be on my hen do, so I was sharing a room with other people, and we were all trying to sleep. Thankfully I had a charging cable on hand, so I just juiced it up to stop the notifications.

I checked the app to see if the low battery notification could be turned off in the app, and there wasn’t an option. Hopefully, Oclean can add this in a future software update.

USB-C charging was a welcome relief for me, as many toothbrushes can only be used with a shaver socket plug. If you get the optional travel case, you can also charge the toothbrush in the case, which has a USB-port.

Performance & Features

  • Effective sonic performance
  • No pressure sensor
  • Custom mode available

The brush head is diamond-shaped and comfortable to use. It uses vibrations from the Maglev Motor which, according to Oclean, provides 84,000 moves a minute, which is twice as much cleaning power as a traditional sonic motor. Note that the brush head does not oscillate as Oral-B brushes do.

…it doesn’t include a pressure sensor, so you won’t know if you’re brushing too hard or soft

Nonetheless, the brushing power is effective, and there are a variety of modes to suit your preferences. I made the most use of the pre-loaded morning and night ones, sunrise soothing and sunset clear-out. The former is a slightly softer brush and shorter at two minutes, while the latter has a firmer feel and is 30 seconds longer.

If you want something a bit more tailored, you can assign a specific plan to Exclusive Mode, the third pre-loaded option on the brush. This can be changed at any time via the app, although sadly there isn’t the option to download multiple modes to the brush.

The modes you can assign include gum massage, brace cleaning, after-food cleaning and more. Each combines one of the four vibration modes with a different strength of brushing force. For example, a mode may be split into sections with ‘strong cleaning’ or ‘soft massage’.

If none of them suits you, then you can create a custom brushing mode by choosing the strength of brushing force, the mode of the vibrations (clean, whitening, massage or sensitive), and the duration of the brushing session.

There are noticeable differences between the various modes. Plus, the two brush heads included can also change your experience. Oclean claims the sound from the brush is under 60dB, and in practice it’s reasonably quiet – although not silent enough to use if someone else is asleep (unless they’re dead to the world).

One downside of the Oclean X Pro Digital is that it doesn’t include a pressure sensor, so you won’t know if you’re brushing too hard or too soft.

Arguably, one of the biggest pros of this toothbrush is its killer battery life. The 800mAh cell means it can be used for around a month before needing a charge, and when you do need to juice it up, it only takes around three hours.

Connected Features & App

  • Brushing feedback
  • Recommended brushing modes
  • Layout and translation issues

The Oclean X Pro Digital sonic electric toothbrush works with the Oclean app, which is available on iOS and Android. It can also sync with Apple Health, although I wasn’t able to try this out.

During the initial setup, the app worked just fine via Bluetooth. However, I occasionally had a few issues connecting. This was also a problem when we tested the X Pro Elite.

Once you’ve paired the brush, the app will ask you to input some profile information, and then give you a quiz to recommend certain brushing modes for you. For example, there are more tailored modes for smokers and brace-wearers, and whitening modes if you frequently drink red wine or coffee.

The homepage of the app provides a breakdown of your cleaning map and marks any areas you’ve missed. It also includes a Xiaomi ‘health clover’ that crunches data based on your previous usage over the past days and weeks.

One nice addition to this app would be the ability to delete any cleans that you don’t want to log. For example, if you accidentally click the start button on the brush and then stop it, this will still be counted as a clean, and therefore the app will give you a harsh judgement, deeming your performance ‘insufficient’.

From what I can see, there’s no obvious way to delete these logs.

That leads me onto my second gripe with the app, which is that the layout is not intuitive. The text is cramped, and often there’s a lot of dead space. The copy also includes some grammatical errors (such as no spacing), very limited information and no links to accredited health sources for claims about diseases.

See the screenshots below as examples:

More detailed tutorials for brushing modes would also be welcome. Currently, the way to get a full score for brushing your teeth isn’t always clear – I feel like sometimes I’m brushing all areas, but the device tells me otherwise.

The good news is that you can completely ignore the Oclean app if you want, as the brush works fine without it.

Price & Availability

At the time of writing, the Oclean X Pro Digital sonic electric toothbrush costs £99/$109. You can buy it from Oclean and Amazon. Amazon is currently throwing in the case at a cheaper price.

Oddly, the Oclean X Pro Elite toothbrush is priced less, at £75/$99 at the time of writing. This has five days more battery life, a quieter motor and four offline brushing modes. I can only presume it costs less because it’s older, so the app and screen have different designs.

Right now, it’s a no-brainer to go for the Elite version. However, prices for these brushes can change, so you’ll still get quite similar features with the Pro version.

Nonetheless, for the range of brushing modes and sleek design, you get a decent amount for your money with the X Pro Digital.

Should you buy the Oclean X Pro Digital sonic electric toothbrush?

A lot is going for the Oclean X Pro Digital – you get a month-long battery life, numerous brushing modes (with the option of a custom one), a wall-mount holder and USB-C charging, making it ideal for travel.

However, rival brushes offer more accurate and comprehensive app experiences, and pressure sensors for users who struggle with knowing whether they’re pressing too hard. In addition, the Elite version of this brush offers more and is currently cheaper.

This may not always be the case, so check out Oclean’s website to determine which brush is better value for money.
