Police in Germany discover dead body while looking for stolen bicycle

While searching for a stolen bicycle, police in Germany by chance discovered the dead body of a 63-year-old woman in a house in the town of Neustrelitz in north-eastern Germany.

Investigators suspect the woman was killed by an act of violence, and have arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of manslaughter in her death, according to a statement from police on Thursday.

Police discovered the body on Wednesday evening and publicly disclosed the incident on Thursday.

The man apparently knew the woman, although he was not related to her or a family member, police said. Police also said he is known to authorities from previous incidents.

Police officers had actually travelled to the apartment block on Wednesday evening because they suspected a stolen bicycle might be found there.

Officers, however, spotted the lifeless woman through a window. She had apparently already been dead for a period of time.

Even before the body found, police had also been called out to deal with the 37-year-old suspect later arrested in the woman's death.

He was reportedly heavily intoxicated and behaving aggressively toward pedestrians in the town of Neustrelitz. An officer who was on his way home from work had observed what was happening, intervened and alerted his colleagues.
