Florida Governor DeSantis signed HB 775 Wednesday, which extends the timeframe for parents to safely surrender their newborns without facing criminal prosecution.

Under the previous law, parents could anonymously surrender infants up to 7 days old, but the new bill increases this window to 30 days.

The extension of the safe abandonment period is a proactive measure aimed at preventing the unsafe abandonment of infants. By allowing more time for parents to make this difficult decision, the law seeks to reduce the risk of newborns being abandoned in potentially dangerous situations.

The expansion of the safe abandonment period reflects a nuanced understanding of the complex challenges faced by parents.

By providing a longer window for this process, the law acknowledges the emotional and practical difficulties that may arise in the immediate aftermath of a birth.
