Ongoing saga at Championship club may explain Derby County wait over key transfer deal - opinion

Derby County have one key name on their transfer radar, but are being made to wait.

Paul Warne will be desperate to start getting some Derby County transfers over the line. But it’s been a slow start to the post-season.

A lot of teams are still finalising their own squads and retained lists and whatnot, and Derby County, like many others, are seemingly waiting on other clubs to decide what they’re doing with their players.

But it seems like the Rams are identifying some summer transfer targets with names like Josh Windass and Viktor Johansson linked; the latter has since signed for Stoke City though.

Ebou Adams is another; the Rams are reportedly keen on re-signing the Cardiff City midfielder after his impressive loan spell at Pride Park last season.

But the ongoing managerial saga at Cardiff may be delaying a potential Derby County swoop for Adams.

The latest at Cardiff City as Erol Bulut faces uncertain future

Cardiff City hired Erol Bulut as manager last summer, and in his first season at the club he guided the Bluebirds to a very commendable 12th place finish in the Championship.

There’s been reports of a new contract for Bulut this summer. But there appears to have been a delay in proceedings with no news of when the contract may be signed or even agreed.

The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust has now called for an end to the delay ‘one way or another’, citing that fans have mixed feelings towards Bulut’s style of play.

So with Cardiff City finalising the future of Bulut, or even facing a managerial change, it would inevitably put player sales, i.e. Adams’ potential sale, on hold.

Derby County facing summer problem

Not only with Adams and Derby County; there’ll be a lot of clubs waiting on key transfer targets this summer, but being forced to wait more than necessary due to circumstances out of their control.

The contract saga with Bulut has been rumbling on for five weeks now and there appears to be no end in sight, which will certain worry Warne where a deal for Adams is regarded.

And the longer that the delay goes on, the more chance that rival teams could take a look at Adams and potentially join the transfer chase.

But it feels unlikely that any decision on Adams will be made until there’s a decision on Bulut; if a new manager comes in, they’ll want a look at Adams, and they may well favour him after his impressive Derby County showing.

It needs to be a big summer at Derby County either way, with the Championship roster for 2023/24 certainly looking fierce.
