US President Joe Biden is travelling to France next week for a visit lasting several days.

Biden will be in France from June 5 to June 9, the White House said on Thursday.

On June 6, the US president will first attend ceremonies in Normandy to mark the landing of Allied troops there 80 years ago in World War II.

On June 7, Biden will give a speech - also on the French coast in Normandy - on the importance of defending freedom and democracy.

Finally, on June 8, Biden and his wife Jill will be received by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on an official state visit in Paris.

The state visit reflects the close ties between the two countries, according to the White House.

Biden and Macron plan to discuss a wide range of global challenges and bilateral issues.

The French government said that among the topics on the agenda for talks is further support for Ukraine in its defence against the Russian invasion.

This would also serve to prepare for the G7 summit in Bari, Italy, in mid-June and the NATO summit in Washington in July.

Macron went to Washington on a state visit in 2022. At the time, the French leader was the first foreign guest to be honoured in this way during Biden's term of office.
