Andriy Lunin now sends Real Madrid message after setback in preparations for UCL final

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has been excellent when called upon this season, but he may have a heartbreaking end to the campaign.

The Ukrainian stepped up whilst Thibaut Courtois was injured, and played a crucial role as Los Blancos knocked Manchester City out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

However, Courtois returned from his long-term injury to play a part in the final few games of the La Liga season, and this may have been some indication that he would controversially replace Lunin for the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

Lunin was then dealt a blow as he picked up a flu virus, and he did not travel with the rest of the squad to London amid fears this could spread to the rest of the squad.

The 25-year-old is now a major doubt for the final, even if he was to be selected over Courtois, and he has now taken to Instagram to express his frustration that his preparation for the game has been disrupted.

“I’m so sorry that I can’t prepare the most important game of the season and the most important in my life together with the team,” he stated.

“Thank you so much for all your messages, support and encouragement!!!

“Here’s to the 15th.”

Whether he plays the final or not, Lunin’s contributions to Real Madrid reaching the Champions League final will not be forgotten.

Lunin saved a penalty in a group stage victory over Braga, which confirmed Real Madrid as group winners.

He then played a huge part in the round of 16 against Lepzig, as he performed superbly as his side came under heavy pressure, with his saves winning Real Madrid the tie.

His best display then came against Man City. After a poor showing in the first leg, he redeemed himself by saving two penalties in the shootout, helping Real Madrid knock out the holders at their own ground.

Even if he does not play the final, should Real Madrid win, Lunin will already have written himself into Real Madrid history.
