Tokyo stocks open higher on bargain-hunting

Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as investors scooped up bargains after the Nikkei index fell to a one-month low the previous day.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 59.88 points, or 0.16 percent, from Thursday to 38,114.01. The broader Topix index was up 17.40 points, or 0.64 percent, at 2,743.60.

On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by oil and coal product, securities house and real estate issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 156.99-157.00 yen compared with 156.77-87 yen in New York and 156.96-98 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0830-0834 and 170.02-09 yen against $1.0826-0836 and 169.82-92 yen in New York and $1.0808-0809 and 169.65-69 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.
