Euro boss now keen on replacing Michael Beale at Sunderland, but he's 'not on the shortlist' right now

A manager linked with Sunderland recently is interested in replacing Michael Beale this summer.

Sunderland are still looking for their successor to Michael Beale, more than three months after parting ways with the former Rangers and QPR boss.

Several names have since been linked, but only a few remain in contention, with Will Still the latest to drop out of contention.

Reports on the continent say that Still, 31, is poised to take charge of RC Lens, following his Reims exit at the start of May.

A new name is now in contention though; former FC Basel, Chicago Fire, and Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky.

The 47-year-old represented the likes of Werder Bremen, Atletico Madrid, Hamburg and more during his playing career, representing Switzerland 75 times.

As a manager, Wicky arguably made his name during his latest stint with Young Boys, whom he guided to the Swiss Cup and the Swiss Super League title during the 2022/23 season.

He was sacked in March this year, leaving with a win rate of 59% after winning 59 of his 100 games at the helm.

Raphael Wicky interested in becoming next Sunderland manager

Sunderland AFC News can now reveal, per Graeme Bailey, that Wicky is interested in becoming the next Sunderland manager.

On Thursday, it was claimed that Wicky has agreed a two-year deal to take charge at the Stadium of Light this summer.

Fabrizio Romano quickly played down those rumours; Romano says that Sunderland have not been in contact with Wicky and that he’s ‘not on the shortlist’ as things stand.

Despite that, Sunderland AFC News understands that Wicky is keen on taking the job, and that owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is keeping his options open for the time being.

Who Sunderland turn to next remains a mystery, though it looks like a swoop for Still could be on the cards.

Alan Nixon claims that Sunderland could ‘push the boat out’ for the 31-year-old over the weekend, in a bid to beat Lens to the appointment.
