Fabrizio Romano says ‘exceptional’ player is set to join Crystal Palace one year after snubbing Liverpool move

Liverpool are yet to make any concrete moves in the summer transfer market.

With Arne Slot’s career at the club set to get officially underway on Saturday, it’s perhaps no surprise that the Reds have been quiet.

There is certainly plenty to do at Anfield, with more transfer rumours being churned out by the day. But until Slot is fully settled at the AXA Training Centre, we may not see any movement.

Nevertheless, that has not stopped some of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals doing business. The Reds won’t want to be left behind.

And after their stunning end to the season, Crystal Palace look set to pull off a deal which Liverpool fans should be taking note of.

Crystal Palace set to sign Daichi Kamada

As Liverpool looked to reshape their midfield last year they were linked with a whole army of potential new signings.

Some of these appeared closer than others, while Jurgen Klopp ultimately settled for four additions.

One of those who seemed like a genuine option for Liverpool was Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada.

Then at Eintracht Frankfurt – and leaving on a free transfer – the Reds were said to be very keen on bringing Kamada to Merseyside.

However, things took a turn for Liverpool when Kamada reportedly snubbed their interest to join AC Milan instead. After his Milan transfer fell through, the Reds were then claimed to be back in for the 27-year-old, only to see him move to Lazio.

Somewhat bizarrely, Kamada was only on a one-year deal in Italy, though. And with his contract set to end once again, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that he’s ready to join Crystal Palace.

“Crystal Palace are closing in on deal to sign Daichi Kamada as free agent, here we go soon!” Romano wrote on X. “After new deal talks collapsed with Lazio due to release clause, Kamada is on the verge of joining CPFC. Oliver Glasner called him after they worked together at Eintracht.”

Liverpool may regret Kamada failure

This has the look of being a brilliant signing for Crystal Palace. They have been utterly resurgent under Oliver Glasner and could be a real threat next season.

From a Liverpool point of view, they don’t necessarily need to be too worried about that. They have different goals to Palace.

Nevertheless, we get the feeling that Kamada could turn out to be a really good signing.

Silky, languid and creative, the Japan international was called ‘exceptional’ by TNT Sports commentator Lucy Ward during a match against West Ham in 2022.

Although he wouldn’t perhaps be a starter for Liverpool, Kamada could have been a great option to offer something a little different from the bench.

With FSG always placing great emphasis on value for money in the market, some may be surprised to see them pass this chance up.
