At least two migrants on drifting boat die off Turkish coast

At least two people were killed off Turkey's Aegean coast after a small boat carrying migrants suffered an engine failure, local authorities said on Friday.

Rescue teams were dispatched to search for six missing people who fell off the rubber dinghy near the tourism hotspot of Bodrum, the Turkish coastguard said. The four others have yet to be found.

Fourteen people were brought to safety.

The coastguard said it received a request for help early Friday that a boat believed to be carrying 20 people was drifting off Bodrum after the engine failure.

Bodrum, like most of the rest of Turkish Aegean coastline, is where smugglers often try to bring people from Turkey across the Aegean into EU member Greece.

The Turkish coastguard reports intercepted boats carrying migrants almost on a daily basis in the area.
