Texas A&M’s effort at the plate in the second inning of their game vs. Grambling State wasn’t very flashy, but it did produce seven runs to put the Aggies in the driver’s seat early.

A&M needed zero home runs to get those seven runners in. Instead, a careful eye at home, opportunistic base-running and a few hits kept the plate busy. At the break between innings when the bottom of the second finally concluded, Aggie head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke with the ESPN broadcast crew.

Of course, he was first asked about the prolific inning of offense his team just enjoyed.

“I mean, we have to stay disciplined,” said Schlossnagle. “And, you know, I think when they’re flipping their breaking balls in there, and changeups, if your ego gets to you and you want to hack, man, they’re going to get you out early. So we’ve done a good job of that so far.”

Texas A&M is also getting a solid start from Tanner Jones so far. Grambling has been able to make contact, but more importantly, Jones kept the Tigers at bay to allow the offense to provide an early lead.

“Tanner’s been getting knocked around, he’s got to get a breaking ball going, because these guys are on the fastball,” evaluated Schlossnagle, who really wanted to see more stuff from his starter.

“He’s got to get the off-speed pitches going, he just has to. Because right now, they’re all over his fastball. The couple little cutter/slider pitches he’s left up, but he has to mix his pitches if he wants to be out there for a while, because they’ve been on him.”

Not too much to complain about so far for Jim Schlossnagle, but still, he wants to see his team focused on playing their game.
