Georgia hosting two 5-stars committed to USC with hopes of flipping both

Georgia is set to host a major list of official visitors this weekend for its first big football recruiting weekend of the summer.

That includes three five-stars, all from the Peach State. And each is a massive target on the defensive side of the ball for the Bulldogs. But two — EDGE Isaiah Gibson and defensive lineman Justus Terry — are already committed to USC and have been since March.

However, that hasn’t stopped UGA’s pursuit of them. And in fact it might have intensified their efforts even more, according to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, who believes Georgia has a good chance of eventually flipping both into their class.

“I think Georgia has got a really good chance to flip both of these guys back. Isaiah Gibson, he’s got Tennessee in the mix. Justus Terry is talking to a few other programs as well. I just think when they committed to USC, that only turned things up for Kirby Smart and Georgia,” Wiltfong said earlier this week during the Wiltfong Whiparound recruiting show. “They’ll get them back this weekend [for official visits]. They were in instant communication with those guys, even from the moment they committed to USC. I don’t think anything has changed from the amount of dialogue they’ve had with Georgia, and now they’re back this weekend.”

Georgia flipping top defensive linemen away from USC isn’t exactly new either. The Bulldogs did it twice in the 2022 cycle, and Wiltfong believes a repeat could be in store.

“You know, we’ve seen this story before,” he added. “Mykel Williams was at one point committed to USC. Christen Miller was at one point committed to USC. They’re on Georgia’s team right now. It’s hard to pull these blue-chippers from Georgia’s neck of the wood out west, and USC is going to have their hands full keeping both of them in the fold moving forward.”

The state of Georgia is loaded in the rising senior class, punctuated by multiple five-stars that are major targets. They’ve already got a head start with commitments from one of the top six in-state targets pledged and two more trending in their direction.

The Bulldogs have nine commitments early on in the cycle and sit at No. 6 in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.

Of Georgia’s nine commitments, six project to the offensive side of the ball and three are expected to play defense at the next level. After seeing the aforementioned Terry flip to USC, five-star tight end Elyiss Williams and four-star EDGE Darren Ikinnagbon are the only UGA commits to rank in the top-100 in the country. Six of the nine commitments hail from the Peach State, with an average distance from Athens of just 239.4 miles.

The latest additions to the class for Georgia include: four-star offensive lineman Mason Short, a one-time Alabama commit who reopened his recruitment when Nick Saban retired; four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery; four-star New Jersey-based EDGE Darren Ikinnagbon; and four-star wide receiver/athlete Thomas Blackshear.
