University of Virginia to pay $9 million settlement to victims of 2022 campus shooting

The University of Virginia will dole out $9 million as part of a settlement related to a 2022 campus shooting that killed three football players and wounded two other students, according to an Associated Press report.

A lawyer representing the victims and their families revealed the decision.

The payments will be split between the families of the three victims, at $2 million each, with the remaining $3 million split between the other two victims, which included football player Mike Hollins.

Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry, all Virginia football players, were all killed in a November 2022 shooting at the school.

Virginia running back Mike Hollins was one of two victims injured in the shooting who survived. In an interview with Michael Strahan on ‘Good Morning America’, he revealed what he took away from the tragic experience and how it changed his life.

“I’ve never been as, like I said, vulnerable or emotional,” Hollins said. “But now it’s just like I don’t really care, I can’t control it, I’m not afraid to tell my friends or my teammates I love you, looking forward to seeing you again, and really meaning it now. I’m doing it for my brothers I lost. I’m still doing it for the people I love, for the people that were on that bus and everything I do from here on will be in their name, in their light. And I just wanna do as much as I can to keep their flame lit.”

With the support of the Virginia community, Hollins made a successful return to the field in 2023. He ran for 274 yards and seven touchdowns on 80 carries, while also catching 10 passes for 34 yards and a score.

Virginia honored the shooting victims with a moving video tribute at its first home game last year. The video was narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

“Through grief and anguish, pain and tears, sadness and sorrow, three of our own were taken from us for reasons we will never understand,” Jackson said in the video. “Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry — no longer can we hear their laughs, see them play or feel their embrace. But their impact will always be with us.”
