'Fantastic'... Manchester United's latest transfer target owes his career progress to Thomas Tuchel

Manchester United are taking a look at raiding Chelsea for a second year in a row, this time for a centre-back.

Last summer there was shock when midfielder Mason Mount emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United.

After negotiations with Chelsea, a fee of £55 million was struck for the midfielder, a sizeable chunk of the club’s summer transfer budget.

Injuries meant Mount’s first season did not work out as planned, but that has not stopped United from reportedly looking at another Chelsea player.

Manchester United want Trevoh Chalobah

Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah has emerged as possible transfer target for Manchester United.

The Independent report Manchester United are keen on the young centre-back, who could cost just £25 million.

Similar to last year with Mount, Chelsea are keen to cash in on the homegrown player before the end of June, for accounting purposes.

Chalobah, 24, bounced back from an early injury to make 17 appearances in total last season, featuring regularly as a starter towards the end of the season when Mauricio Pochettino finally got Chelsea into form, before his surprise sacking.

Chalobah owes career success to Thomas Tuchel

The finest moment of Trevoh Chalobah’s career came with Chelsea’s Champions League success in 2021.

It was under the outgoing Bayern Munich boss that Chalobah’s career turned around.

At the start of 2020/21, Chalobah had been expected to go out on loan, before impressing Chelsea’s then manager Tuchel during pre-season.

The German boss told Goal: “I think he did a fantastic pre-season with us and he’s a very good player, and even more importantly a top character

“He has both feet on the ground and he took his chance very impressively.

“So I think it’s very logical that he stays with us and is looking for his chance here. We let some players go but Trevoh is the guy we absolutely want to keep, and this is the status for him.”

He has made 80 appearances in total, the most coming under Tuchel, a total of 31, also playing under Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, and more recently, Pochettino.

Now there is an outside chance of Chalobah being reunited with Tuchel at Old Trafford, if the German succeeds in his wish to replace Erik ten Hag, with Ineos assessing all options when it comes to who will manage Manchester United next season.

If Tuchel was appointed, it would strengthen the likelihood of United making a move for Chalobah.
