A police officer injured in a knife attack during an anti-Islamic event in the German city of Mannheim has been placed in an induced coma, a police spokesman said.

"He remains in critical condition," the spokesman for the state criminal police office said.

The attack occurred on Friday morning during an event hosted by the Pax Europa movement. Several other people were also injured. The assailant underwent surgery and is currently unable to be questioned, the spokesman said. The motive remains unclear.

Several media reports said the suspect is a 25-year-old from Herat, Afghanistan, who lives in southern Hesse. According to security sources, he is married to a German woman who has two children.
