Darren Bent says £73m Champions League finalist would not start over one Arsenal star

Arsenal may look to sign a winger this summer, but it remains to be seen what kind of option they will go for.

Mikel Arteta is pursuing another attacker, and RB Leipzig attacker Benjamin Sesko now appears to be the preferred target upfront.

The Slovenian is typically a centre-forward, but Sesko’s speed means that he could play on the wings as an outlet, and he could make himself an option on the left.

Gabriel Martinelli is Arsenal’s fastest attacker, but he had a disappointing campaign overall, and it now appears that any winger who arrives would ideally be able to play on both sides to both cover for Bukayo Saka, and potentially start ahead of Martinelli.

One surprise player could be Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho. The England International is currently on loan at his former club Borussia Dortmund, where he is beginning to find his confidence again, and he helped the German side set up a Champions League final clash with Real Madrid at Wembley.

However, former Tottenham Hotspur striker, and Arsenal fan Darren Bent has now claimed that Sancho would still not get into this Arsenal side despite his improved form.

Bent says Jadon Sancho would not start ahead of Gabriel Martinelli for Arsenal

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent was asked whether Sancho would start ahead of Martinelli on the left-wing, but he was adamant that the 23-year-old is still not at the right level to play for Arsenal.

“No, probably not. Not right now. No. If I was to get that Jadon Sancho against PSG every single week, 100%. But if that Jadon Sancho was playing every single week like he did in that leg against PSG, he would be at United. That’s the reality,” he stated.

His performance against PSG in the Champions League semi-final first leg was outstanding, as Sancho completed a record 13 dribbles to help beat the Parisians.

Sancho joined Man United for £73m in 2021, but failed to fulfil his potential at Old Trafford before a fallout with Erik ten Hag saw him frozen out of the squad.

Although he can play on both sides, his struggles at Man United should serve as a red flag over whether he would fit into Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Sancho is also on a high wage, and would still require a huge transfer fee for a player who has failed to find any consistent form for over three years.

Despite his strong display against PSG, he scored just twice in 14 Bundesliga games after his return to Germany, and whilst the Champions League final could be a good opportunity for him to prove himself on a huge stage, there are still massive question marks over what his true level is.
