Time to bust out the Sàozhǒu. That’s Mandarin for broom. DeMarcus Cousins led the Taiwan Beer Leopards to a win in the T1 Taiwan League Championship, sweeping Taipei Taisin Mars 4-0 in the seven-game finals.
In the championship-clinching Game 4, Cousins finished with 24 points, 24 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist.
Cousins played somewhat nonchalantly in the first two games of the series, settling for primarily 3s and not exactly hitting the glass. However, he turned it on to the Boogie of old in the final two games, averaging 22 points, 19.5 rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots.
Cousins originally signed a 10-day contract back in January with the Taiwanese team but has since stuck around to make sure his team won it all. If you still haven’t picked up your Beer Leopards Boogie jersey, what are you waiting for?
This makes Boogie’s second championship ring (do they give rings out for titles in Taiwan? I have no idea). He technically won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, though the team waived him due to injury before the playoffs.
As for what’s next for Cousins, it is anyone’s guess. Cousins is just 33 years old and while the competition in Taiwan might not quite be what it is in the NBA, I find it hard to believe there isn’t a team out there in need of a reliable big man veteran capable of big numbers off the bench.
Then again, he’s been killing it on the podcast scene, so he could take his talents behind the microphone for good.
For now, congrats to Boogie on another championship. I can only hope he celebrated by doing the John Wall dance all over Taipei City.
