Activists are set to form a human chain during a vigil in the western German city of Mannheim on Sunday following a knife attack which left seven people injured.

A non-partisan alliance has come forward to organize the human chain, under the motto: "Solidarity against violence, hatred and agitation."

"We want to hold a quiet gathering without slogans and flags," Green Party city councillor Gerhard Fontagnier told the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper on Saturday.

The vigil is supported by a range of political parties represented on the city council, organizers said.

It emerged in response to a planned rally by the youth wing of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

The Young Alternative group has organized a protest on the city square where six people, including one policeman, were injured at an anti-Islamic event by a 25-year-old man born in Afghanistan.

The slogan for the youth protest is: "Remigration would have prevented this crime!" The concept of remigration - involving deporting large numbers of people of foreign origin - has been widely criticized across Germany.

City authorities confirmed that the protest has been officially registered. A police spokesman also told the Mannheimer Morgen that forces would be deployed on Sunday.

Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution is currently investigating the Young Alternative, which it has labelled a right-wing extremist organization.
