Up until this year’s NBA trade deadline, PJ Washington spent the entirety of his NBA career on the Charlotte Hornets. While he had always been good for the Hornets, the franchise itself hadn’t been so good. Charlotte had only won 40+ games once since Washington was drafted in 2019, and that was in the 2021-22 season.

So, when Washington was dealt to the Mavericks, who were 29-23 at the time, ahead of this season’s trade deadline, you could say he got an upgrade.

After acquiring the former All-SEC selection, the Mavericks went 21-9 to finish 50-32 in the regular season, and they have since made their way to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

After clinching the Western Conference Finals on Thursday night, Washington was celebrating with his teammates in the locker room, and he decided to take the party to social media by going on an Instagram Live video.

One of the people watching the video was Washington’s former UK teammate and Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro. Herro would leave a comment under Washington’s video, poking fun at the fact that he went from playing for the mediocre Charlotte Hornets to being in the NBA Finals.

How you go from Charlotte to the finals, you really made it out the mud with this one,” Herro said. All Washington could do was laugh.

Clearly, the Charlotte Hornets have become the laughingstock of the NBA. However, Washington now gets to be in his first-ever NBA Finals with the hopes of bringing the Dallas Mavericks just their second title in franchise history.

This postseason, Washington is averaging 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds in 36.5 minutes per game. Behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, two future Hall of Famers, Washington has proven that he can help contribute to a team with championship aspirations.

Now, go get that ring.
