‘Wow’: Alan Shearer says ‘magnificent’ Man City star was ‘unplayable’ this season

Alan Shearer has hailed one Manchester City player for his performances this season.

In Pep Guardiola’s eighth season in charge of the Manchester club, the Blues won their sixth Premier League title in seven years and became the first team to win four in a row.

The Citizens ended the 2023/23 campaign with 91 points on the board, two more than Arsenal in second place and nine more than Liverpool in third.

They also ended the season with the best attacking record in the league, finding the back of the net 96 times in total, five more times than the Gunners and 10 more than Liverpool.

Now that the season has drawn to a close, one pundit and former top-flight star has shared his thoughts on the efforts of one particular City star this season, speaking about him in glowing terms.

Alan Shearer names Phil Foden as the best player of the season

In a recent article shared on the official Premier League website, numerous pundits were asked to name who they felt the standout player of the campaign was.

After Shearer named Phil Foden as his choice for this particular honour, the former Newcastle United star had this to say about the midfielder.

He said: “What a talent. Magnificent. At times he was unplayable, and he’s deservedly been named the Player of the Season. Six Premier League titles at the age of 23, wow!”

Out of the eight pundits who were asked, Shearer was one of the six who picked Foden, whereas Tim Sherwood picked Rodri and Don Hutchison went for Declan Rice.

Foden’s star season

Having started 33 of the 35 league games he appeared in, only Rodri played more minutes than Foden throughout the campaign.

Across his 35 appearances, the Englishman scored 19 goals and delivered eight assists, making it his best campaign for goal contributions.

As Shearer mentioned, the 24-year-old won the official Premier League Player of the Season award and was also named the FWA’s Men’s Player of the Year and the Manchester City Player of the Season.

Taking all of that on board and the fact that he was such a danger to opposition defences throughout the season, it’s easy to see why Shearer says Foden was unplayable at times and deserves all the accolades he’s got.
