Zelensky to attend upcoming G7 summit, Italy says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will take part in the summit of the G7 leading industrialized nations scheduled to take place in Italy from June 13-15, a spokesman for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed late on Saturday.

It remained unclear whether the Ukrainian leader would attend the meeting in the southern region of Apulia in person or join via video link.

The G7 is an informal forum of the leaders of major democratic industrialized nations, including Germany, Italy, France, Britain, Japan, Canada and the US. Italy has held the presidency of the group since the beginning of the year.

Over the past months, Zelensky has repeatedly attended high-level talks in person to shore up support for his country, which has been under attack from Russia for more than two years.

He also attended the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima last year. For security reasons, however, Kiev usually doesn't announce his trips abroad beforehand.
