The blaze is understood to have started soon after 3am yesterday when cables on the site set alight.

Smoke could be seen coming from the premises, which is also close to St John Fisher Catholic Comprehensive School and Fort Pitt Grammar School For Girls.

A spokesman for KFRS said no casualties had been reported.

Overnight, a fire service spokesman said: “People are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke from a fire at an electrical substation.

“Two fire engines are at the scene and crews are using dry powder to extinguish the fire.

“Please share this information with loved ones and neighbours in the affected area who may not have access to the internet.”

But as of 8am, KFRS updated their advice - no longer requiring local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

They also confirmed another fire engine had been brought in to help, alongside staff from UK Power Networks who came to re-energise the power.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
