Report: Manchester United ready to double striker's wages in £60m transfer move, Ralf Rangnick is a big fan

Manchester United are on the hunt for a new striker this summer and may focus the attention on the Premier League market.

As far as debut seasons go, Rasmus Hojlund’s was pretty good for Manchester United.

The Dane joined United from Atalanta last summer, less than a year since leaving Austrian side Sturm Graz.

The leap from FC Copenhagen cast-off to United’s leading striker was a swift one for Hojlund and he understandably suffered some ups and downs.

Despite some struggles in front of goal at times, Hojlund ended the campaign with 16 goals across all competitions.

That gives Hojlund and United something to work with going forward but competition is needed up front.

Manchester United want Matheus Cunha

That leaves United desperate for another forward and Ineos may have to dig deep to bring in a new goalscorer this summer.

Talents such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee have been heavily linked but United could look closer to home.

The Mirror report that United are now interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha.

It’s stated that United scouts consistently scouted Cunha this past season and he is now ‘high’ on the list of targets at Old Trafford.

The report adds that United would be willing to double Cunha’s £60,000-a-week wages, offering up to £120,000-a-week to try and tempt the Brazilian away from Old Trafford.

A £60million price tag is thought to be on Cunha’s head, leaving United to potentially cough up nearly double the £35million Wolves paid to land him in 2023.

Cunha hit 12 goals and seven assists in 32 Premier League games this past season, enjoying a strong season with Wolves.

United fans may be very familiar with Cunha and not just because of his Premier League exploits.

Reports in August 2022 suggested that United wanted to sign Cunha from Atletico Madrid but no deal was done.

TalkSPORT even claimed that a £42million deal was close but Cunha ended up staying in Spain before then heading to Wolves in the middle of the season.

Ralf Rangnick a big fan of Cunha

United have clearly been big fans of Cunha for a while now and former boss Ralf Rangnick may have put him on the radar during his time as manager.

Rangnick had moved on by the time the Cunha rumours really started to gather momentum but he may have at least drawn attention to the Brazilian’s talent.

Rangnick oversaw Cunha’s arrival at RB Leipzig in 2018, luring him away from Swiss side Sion.

The German – now managing Austria – praised Cunha as ‘highly interesting’ whilst praising his ‘speed and offensive drive’.

Rangnick believed that Cunha fit RB Leipzig perfectly but he ended up scoring just nine times in 52 games for the Bundesliga side.

Cunha moved on to Hertha Berlin, Atletico and then Wolves and has started to live up to the potential Rangnick saw in him.

United could now pounce to land Cunha, with his versatility to play in different attacking roles no doubt appealing as the summer transfer window moves into focus.
