"Fierce battles with the occupiers continue in the town and its outskirts, as the Russians keep trying to advance or gain a foothold with small assault groups," he said.

Ukrainian defenders are doing everything to prevent the Russian military from gaining a foothold and are keeping them under fire control, particularly near the Vovcha River, preventing them from crossing to the other side.

Yuriy Povkh, spokesman for the Kharkiv operational and tactical troop grouping, said on May 30 that the Armed Forces of Ukraine control 70% of Vovchansk, and street fighting continues in the settlement.
The Russians are not changing their tactics near Lyptsi and are trying to advance in small groups to gain a foothold in new territory but are not having any success.

A May 31 report by the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces recently regained some positions in Vovchansk amid Russia's continued offensive in the area. Geolocated footage shows that Russian troops were unable to gain a foothold on the southern bank of the Vovcha River within Vovchansk.
Russian sources released footage on May 30 showing Russian aircraft destroying a bridge over the Vovcha River near Soborna Street in Vovchansk. On May 29 and 30, fighting took place both in Vovchansk and on its outskirts, particularly near the village of Starytsia. Several Russian "milbloggers" claimed that the intensive use of drones by both Ukraine and Russia hinders movement in Vovchansk and forces both sides to operate in small groups. Russian forces are often moving on foot, motorcycles, or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in frontline areas in the northern Kharkiv Oblast.

In a video address to world leaders released on May 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian troops were forming a new military group near the Ukrainian border, 90 kilometers from Kharkiv.
