Lord-Lieutenant to help almshouse charity Royal Albert Homes mark 165 years

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Julie Spence, will be guest of honour as the Cambridge Royal Albert Homes celebrates 165 years.

The charity provides subsidised housing and community near the centre of the city for people who are over 60, are capable of independent living, and who are a resident in or have a close connection to Cambridge.

Since being founded, the charity has helped change hundreds of lives by offering community living in almshouses on Hills Road to those in need.

Mrs Spence will be among a number of dignitaries at an open day hosted by the charity on Sunday, 30 June.

It will offer a chance to visit the charity’s gardens and historic buildings, meet the residents, enjoy refreshments and music, and support the Cambridge Royal Albert Homes community.

Alistair, a Cambridge Royal Albert Homes resident, said: “The charity has saved my life and continues to do so.

“I was depressed and facing losing my flat following a divorce when I applied to live here. The Cambridge Royal Albert Homes have provided me with a secure home and companionship when I needed it most.”

Edward Thackray, a Cambridge Royal Albert Homes trustee, added: “Over my rewarding years as a trustee here, I have been amazed by the strong community spirit.

“I am certain that the good neighbourliness that develops in almshouses such as ours leads to prolonged and happy lives.”
