Real Madrid midfielder confirms he will take Toni Kroos' number

Federico Valverde has announced his plans to take over Toni Kroos' shirt number as the German midfielder bids farewell on his time at Real Madrid.

Kroos played his final game for Madrid on Saturday, following his decision to retire from the game completely after the upcoming European Championships - during which he will feature for the host nation.

The German managed to see out his last club appearance with an assist, setting up Dani Carvajal's opener in Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

His departure means that the number eight jersey in Real Madrid’s squad is now available for claiming.

Speaking after the victory at Wembley Stadium, Valverde confirmed that he will don the number in Carlo Ancelotti's squad next season.

"I love number 15, my dream at Real Madrid started with this number," said the Uruguayan. "But yes, I will change it in two months. Let's say that chapter finished quite well."

When asked how much he would miss his midfield partner, Valverde added: "A lot, like everyone else.

"He is a person who has left his legend here, his mark. We, as youngsters, try to learn as much from him as possible, like with [Luka] Modric.

"Thank you for all that you have given and taught us on a day-to-day basis, for that competitiveness."

Kroos dominated among all 22 starters on Saturday with 108 touches, 94 attempted passes, and 91 completed passes. Only teammate Ferland Mendy surpassed him in passing accuracy. Meanwhile, Dortmund's Julian Brandt equalled Kroos' tally with four chances created.
