Romania is discussing the possibility of transferring the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. This system could also cover Romanian territory, states Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Minister of Romania.
According to Ciolacu, the issue of transferring the Patriot system should be considered by experts to find the best solution. After that, the decision will be approved by the Supreme Council of National Defense of Romania.
“So, at this moment, the proposal is under analysis,” the Romanian prime minister said.
At the same time, he refused to disclose any details on this issue, as it could harm Romania's relations with NATO partners and security.
“I know it is an interesting topic. I would create a breaking news, but I think we have reached the political maturity to avoid such things in matters so important. I am firmly convinced that the decision will not be such as to weaken Romania's security,” emphasized Ciolacu.
Air defense systems for Ukraine
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 25 Patriot systems are needed to close the skies over Ukraine. Currently, Ukraine already knows where to get 7 systems. Germany has already promised to provide one of them.
Romania has long been talking about giving Ukraine its Patriot system. However, earlier Prime Minister Ciolacu said that the Romanian Defense Minister was against such a step.
However, at the end of May, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said that the decision to transfer the Patriot system should be made by the Supreme National Defense Council. However, as the president emphasized, the transfer of the system to Ukraine should not weaken Romania's air defense.
