German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday expressed his shock at the death of a police officer following an attack in Mannheim.
"I am deeply shocked that the courageous police officer succumbed to his serious injuries after the terrible attack in Mannheim," Scholz wrote in a post on social media platform X.
"His commitment to the safety of us all deserves the highest recognition. In these bitter hours, my thoughts are with his family and all those who mourn him," Scholz added.
The officer was stabbed at an anti-Islam event held in Mannheim's market square on Friday and died of his injuries on Sunday afternoon.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said his death made her feel "infinitely sad."
She paid tribute to the officer's courageous intervention to save lives. "He died in the service of our security," she added.
