Uber to launch ride-hailing service in Japan if deregulated: CEO

Uber Technologies Inc.'s top executive said Monday that his company will launch its ride-hailing business in Japan if the ban on such services operated by non-taxi companies is fully lifted.

Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the Japanese version of ride-sharing has been slow to take off and proposed the elimination of restrictions such as time zones and areas of operations.

In April, the ban was partially lifted for local taxi firms, allowing them to employ and manage standard license holders to offer taxis services with their own private vehicles under certain conditions.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday instructed relevant ministers to proceed with discussions on the complete removal of the ban on ride-hailing services.
