Manchester United told to ‘definitely’ make Erik ten Hag move, Dutch legend confused by manager’s comments

Manchester United supporters are awaiting a decision over the future of FA Cup winning manager Erik ten Hag.

New investors Ineos have been taking their time to assess the future of manager Erik ten Hag. There is no firm timeframe on when the decision will be made.

On one hand, Ineos are being smart to delay their choice a little. Keeping Ten Hag might look kneejerk, after the FA Cup win, while sacking him so soon after would have been in poor taste.

However, Ineos will not want to look indecisive and leave Ten Hag dangling too long without a resolution.

Ronald de Boer backs Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag’s future is a hot topic of discussion, with the former Ajax manager winning two trophies in two seasons for Manchester United.

This success was tempered by a very poor Premier League campaign with United finishing in eighth place, posing a real dilemma over what to do next.

Former Dutch international Ronald de Boer believes Ten Hag deserves more time to build on what he has already achieved, and also cited patience shown with Sir Alex Ferguson back in 1990.

De Boer told DR Sports: “I think he is a very good manager. I must say that he also convinced in the FA Cup, because he had a very tactical plan in place.

“Sometimes you need lead time. I think Ferguson also took quite a long time to become successful. I would definitely give him another year.

“I’ve seen how he works: he’s a workaholic, that’s unbelievable. Everyone can work hard, but he also has the knowledge.”

De Boer admits Ten Hag has not helped himself

While this season ended on a high, it has been a very difficult campaign, with Manchester United losing 14 Premier League matches.

De Boer says he has at times been perplexed at post-match comments from Ten Hag through the season.

He said: “Sometimes I also thought: what are you saying now, Erik?

“He sometimes said that United played dominant football. I didn’t see any dominant football at all in such a match. I thought: have you seen the same match?’

“Maybe he changed his mind when he watched the match later.”
