What F1 teams do well at Canadian GP with Ferrari and McLaren successful in Montreal

Formula 1 has visited the Great White North since 1967 and Montreal has hosted the Canadian GP since 1978, so F1 Oversteer has looked into what teams tend to do well.

A variety of Formula 1 outfits have tasted success since the series first visited North America in 1967. Jack Brabham also won the first-ever F1 Canadian GP driving for his own team after beating teammate Denny Hulme by over a minute across 90 laps of Mosport Park in Ontario.

Yet Hulme would only have to wait until the 1968 meet to win the Canadian GP after signing with McLaren. The Kiwi also stood on the top step of the podium as Formula 1 made its first visit to the Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Gilles Villeneuve won the first Canadian GP in Montreal.

Mosport Park was the initial home of the Canadian GP, including before the race’s debut on the F1 calendar. The race was originally a sports car event and also later ran under CAN-AM rules before Formula 1 took over the naming rights. It has remained an F1 event ever since.

Brabham were even dominant in F1’s early trips to Mosport Park, while McLaren and Ferrari were the sole teams to win Canadian Grand Prix at Mont-Tremblant. The Scuderia were also the first Formula 1 team to win the Canadian GP after the event moved to Montreal in 1978.

McLaren winning the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix at Mont-Tremblant, Mosport Park and Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve has helped the Woking outfit to be the most successful team F1 has yet seen in the Great White North. But Ferrari’s wins also run the papaya squad’s total close.

Ferrari have recorded most of the team’s Canadian GP successes since F1 moved the race to Montreal, as well. Only when Jacky Ickx beat Scuderia teammate Clay Regazzoni at the 1970 race at Mont-Tremblant from pole position has Ferrari won the Canadian GP anywhere else.

Williams since their victory in 1979 plus Ligier in 1981, Benetton after 1991, Renault in 2006, BMW Sauber in 2008, Red Bull since 2013 and Mercedes since 2015 have also only won the Canadian GP since F1 moved the race to Montreal after plans for an event in Toronto failed.

In contrast, Tyrrell and Wolf only ever won the Canadian GP when F1 went to Mosport-Park. Ligier also secured the team’s only Canadian GP victory in Montreal at the 1981 race before the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame was renamed the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve after the home hero.

Ferrari and Ford are the most successful engine manufacturers at the Canadian GP

Ferrari winning Canadian Grand Prix a plenty at Mont-Tremblant and in Montreal has helped the Scuderia to be the joint-most successful engine manufacturer at the Formula 1 race with Ford, too. Ford engines powered 12 race-winning cars during its partnership with Cosworth.
