'He is waiting': Alan Nixon drops update on 'outstanding' manager Leicester City want to replace Maresca

Leicester City’s hunt for a new manager may have been prolonged, as the stance of one target has been made clear.

As Enzo Maresca awaits being unveiled as the new Chelsea manager, Leicester City will continue their pursuit of finding a new boss.

After securing promotion back to the Premier League, the Foxes’ plans were somewhat derailed by Maresca’s pending departure from the club after just a year.

With a number of targets rumoured to be of interest to the newly-promoted side, one favourable figure’s plans have been revealed.

Leicester City learn Graham Potter stance amid managerial links

Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter is rumoured to be ‘on the hit list’ at Leicester, as per journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon’s fresh report detailed that despite Potter being wanted by both the Foxes and his former club Brighton, the manager has his eyes on a different project.

It’s said that while Leicester would ‘like to speak’ with Potter, the 49-year-old wants the England job.

Nixon reported that whilst the ex-Premier League manager is of interest to the two clubs, he is in ‘no rush’ to jump into a job, with his ‘sights’ on taking over from Gareth Southgate.

Potter would have been a good match for Leicester

While Potter’s record at Chelsea was nothing to shout about, having the lowest-points-per-game record of any other Blues boss (1.42, via Transfermarkt), the Englishman showed his worth at Brighton.

The Leicester target took the Seagulls from being a side threatened with relegation to a team firmly in the top half of the Premier League table, earning high praise for his transformation of the club.

As well as bolstering Brighton’s outlook, Potter implemented an attractive and exhilarating style of football at the Amex, suggesting that he could have been the ideal fit for Leicester.

Pep Guardiola once called Potter’s work at Brighton ‘outstanding’, making him a favourable candidate to take over from Maresca, who impressed greatly during his term at the King Power.

While it’s a shame that the 49-year-old’s links to Leicester are unlikely to develop, Nixon also relayed that both Steve Cooper and Carlos Corberan are other options for the Foxes to consider.

Of course, a manager with Premier League experience would be desirable as Leicester aim to remain in the top flight beyond the 2024/25 season, making Potter’s stance quite a blow.

Time must be taken to ensure the right successor to Maresca is identified ahead of the club’s Premier League return, in what is a trialling situation for the club after such a successful 2023/24 campaign.
