NCW seeks permission to visit Sandeshkhali amid reports of violence, atrocities against women

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, highlighting the recent reports of post-poll violence in Sandeshkahli and other parts of West Bengal and sought permission to visit the tense regions.

Alleging the high-handedness and police atrocities against the women, Rekha Sharma said the NCW team would investigate and take needful action.

"There are recent reports in the media about the post-poll violence in Sandeshkahli and other parts of West Bengal concerning the high-handedness and police atrocities against the women," Rekha Sharma said in the letter.

"Keeping in view the seriousness of the matter, a team of National Commission for Women (headed by Chairperson) would like to visit the Sandeshkhali and other parts of West Bengal to investigate and take needful action," she added.

Meanwhile, amid the tense situation, security forces in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali carried out a flag march on Monday, ahead of the counting day of Lok Sabha polls.

Earlier on Sunday, West Bengal police went to arrest an alleged accused in Saturday's violence in Basirhat's Sandeshkhali, the local women resisted and a scuffle broke out on Sunday.

Sandeshkhali residents have demanded the deployment of central forces for protection amidst recent clashes.

Earlier, an alleged clash broke out between Trinamool Congress and BJP workers at Bayarbari in West Bengal's Basirhat in the seventh and final phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday.

The Lok Sabha elections in Basirhat, which comprises the Sandeshkhali Assembly is a three-way battle between the TMC, BJP, and CPM. BJP has fielded Rekha Patra from the Basirhat constituency, who is up against a three-way contest against TMC's Haji Nurul Islam and CPI (M) candidate Nirapada Sarkar. (ANI)
