Former Austrian chancellor Brigitte Bierlein has died at the age of 74, authorities said on Monday.

Bierlein, a constitutional judge, became the first female chancellor in Austrian history in 2019, after the collapse of her predecessor Sebastian Kurz's government due to the Ibiza scandal.

She led the country for seven months in a caretaker government headed by civil servants.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the country owed Bierlein a "debt of gratitude" in a post on the social media platform X. He added: "She took on responsibility at a difficult time, out of love for the republic and her homeland Austria."
