Welcome to the show Adam Mazur. After getting promoted to Triple-A El Paso on May 14th, MLB Insider Robert Murray reports that Mazur has been called up by the San Diego Padres. He is expected to start on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. When Mazur takes the mound at Angel Stadium, he will become just the fourth former Hawkeye to pitch in an MLB game since 2000, joining Wes Obermueller (2002), Matt Dermody (2016) and Nick Allgeyer (2021).

Adam Mazur started his college career at South Dakota State and spent two years with the Jackrabbits. He made 16 starts as the ace of the SDSU staff, striking out 106 over 88.1 innings. Mazur entered the transfer portal in the summer prior to his junior season and chose Iowa over Alabama and Purdue.

He burst onto the scene that summer pitching in the Cape Cod League with the Wareham Gateman. Mazur made six starts, posting a 1.55 ERA over 29.0 innings, including 34 strikeouts to just six walks. Opponents mustered just 0.62 hits per inning against him.

As a junior at Iowa, Mazur won Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and was an ABCA Third Team All-American. Over 15 starts, Adam posted a 3.07 ERA, racking up 98 strikeouts to 30 walks over 93.2 innings. He completed 6.0+ innings in nine of his 15 starts, including a complete game shutout against Nebraska. His 98 strikeouts in a season ranks as the fourth-most in a single season in school history and he ranked eighth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings.

Mazur opted to enter the MLB Draft after his junior season at Iowa and was drafted with the 53rd overall pick in the second round by the San Diego Padres. It’s the highest an Iowa player has been selected in the draft since Tim Costo was picked in the first round (8th pick) of the 1990 draft by the Cleveland Indians.

In his first season with the Padres organization in 2023, Mazur began the year with the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps. He was promoted to Double-A San Antonio after 11 starts with the TinCaps, posting a 2.02 ERA, including 47 strikeouts to ten walks over 58.0 innings. With San Antonio, Adam appeared in 12 games with seven starts. He finished with a 4.03 ERA over 38.0 innings, including 43 strikeouts to just seven walks.

Coming into this season, Mazur was ranked as the #5 prospect in the San Diego Padres organization by MLB.com. He started the season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions, but was promoted to Triple-A El Paso after posting a 1.95 ERA over six starts with the Missions. Since his promotion on May 14th, Mazur made four starts with the Triple-A Chihuahuas. Over the course of 34 appearances, including 28 starts in the minors, Adam has a 3.18 ERA over 147.1 innings, including 140 strikeouts to 26 walks. He owns and impressive 67.0% strike thrown rate and gives up just 1.59 walks per nine innings.

First pitch between the Padres and Angels on Tuesday night is set for 8:38pm CT.
