‘I told them’: Frederic Vasseur shares what he said to the Ferrari garage after Charles Leclerc’s Monaco win

There were emotional scenes in the paddock and the grandstands dotted around the Monte Carlo circuit last Sunday.

After years of bad luck, Ferrari star Charles Leclerc finally took the chequered flag at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur was speaking to Motorsport.com after the race and was delighted with both of his drivers.

He called Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz ‘mega professional’ after he held off Lando Norris to make sure both Ferraris were on the podium.

Vasseur has now shared what he told the Ferrari garage after Leclerc’s fantastic victory in Monaco.

He’ll be hoping it’s a result that the team can build on after closing the gap to Red Bull at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.

Frederic Vasseur shares message to Ferrari team after Monaco Grand Prix win

There were signs at the end of the 2023 campaign that Ferrari were on the rise.

They narrowly missed out on finishing 2 in the championship to Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc trying everything – including backing George Russell up on the last lap – to try and cut the deficit.

It was always going to be fascinating to see how each of Red Bull’s closest competitors fared over the winter and while the champions unveiled a surprisingly revolutionary design for this year, Ferrari built on what they had in 2023.

When Max Verstappen won four of the first five races, it appeared as though F1 was in for a repeat of the most dominant history in the sport’s history.

However, both Ferrari and McLaren have delivered upgrade packages that have created the prospect of a three-way title battle.

Charles Leclerc has always been supremely quick over one lap and that earned him a vital pole position on the streets of his home circuit.

Frederic Vasseur was delighted for Leclerc and the rest of the Ferrari team after he secured a composed win in Monaco.

All eyes turn to the Canadian Grand Prix to see if the Prancing Horse can continue this form or if they were simply best placed in Monte Carlo.

Ferrari closing the gap to Red Bull

Asked what he said in the Ferrari garage after the race, Vasseur said: “I told them that every single member is a performance differentiator.

“Everybody in the company is playing a role and it’s not just about the head of aerodynamics or the chief engineer.

“Performance is coming from everybody in terms [of] speeding up the production or quality.

“I told them that they are the owners of the results when the results are not great, but they are also the owners of the results when we are winning. It is their trophy as much as anyone else’s.”

Ferrari have a very strong record in Canada, with no team winning more races in the country.

Vasseur has admitted that Ferrari have sacrificed qualifying performance to concentrate on being faster in races.

That makes Leclerc’s performance in Monaco even more impressive and the Monegasque will hope he can take full advantage of any difficulties Red Bull might face in Canada to close the gap on Max Verstappen even further.
