'I expect': Jamie Carragher predicts how Liverpool will perform under Arne Slot next season

Liverpool are in for an exciting summer, even if supporters are not exactly sure what will happen next season.

Arne Slot has come in for Jurgen Klopp, who has departed Anfield a hero after a stunning period with the Reds.

Slot was given a warm welcome to the club by his predecessor and indeed the Liverpool fans, but the hard work must now get underway.

The new man in the dugout certainly has the backing of some of his new players, with Trent Alexander-Arnold among those trusting the decision from the board.

The Dutchman arrives at Anfield following a successful spell at Feyenoord, where he won the league and the Dutch Cup, having also led the club to a Europa Conference League final.

Jamie Carragher makes Arne Slot prediction at Liverpool

There is a very real possibility that Slot will struggle on Merseyside, with the managerial job at Anfield certainly not an easy one.

But Carragher is not worried about the transition, and believes Slot will not suffer the same fate that Unai Emery did after taking over from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, and that of David Moyes after he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

“I expect us to be competitive, as long as we have a good summer transfer window,” Carragher told the Metro. “We have people behind the scenes.

“I don’t think they had that structure at Man United when Ferguson left. It was the same with Wenger. They were old-fashioned football managers who ran everything and those days have gone.

“The reason those days are gone is because when a figure like that – or any manager in fact – moves on, you almost have to start again.

“I don’t think any manager wants that. I think the fact Arne Slot will be a head coach rather than a manager is pretty telling.

“I don’t see Liverpool having as big a drop-off as Man United and Arsenal. There might be a drop-off, because Jurgen Klopp is a great football manager, but I still expect Liverpool to compete for all honours including the Champions League.”

Will Arne Slot be successful at Anfield?

It is, of course, far too early to tell if Slot will be a good fit for Liverpool, with the manager only getting underway at the beginning of the month.

One certainty, however, is that he has big boots to fill, with Klopp having enjoyed a very successful spell at Anfield.

Just like Emery and Moyes, there will be immediate pressure on Slot to perform and get results, but Reds fans will do their best and give the Dutchman time.

Lessons can be learned from other Premier League clubs who have simply struggled due to constant managerial changes, with Chelsea the prime example.

But like Carragher, former Reds striker Daniel Sturridge is also expecting a smooth transition, and is confident of a bright future for Liverpool under the guidance of Slot.
