'I've heard the horror stories'... Trey Lance singles out two players that he is 'thankful' for in his development

Trey Lance has endured a turbulent NFL career to date but is hopeful that he can get his journey back on track in 2024.

Since being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and then being traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, Trey Lance has started just four NFL games in his career.

The Dallas Cowboys’ third-string quarterback sat behind Jimmy Garoppolo in his rookie year and then was made the starter in 2022.

Trey Lance suffers a brutal injury which derails his NFL career as a starter

Devastatingly, a season-ending injury meant Brock Purdy was given the chance to shine and the team did not look back.

Therefore, he was traded to the Cowboys for a 2024 third-round pick but failed to impress in training camp.

Moreover, he was made the third-choice quarterback on the roster after Cooper Rush was awarded the job of supporting Dak Prescott.

Prescott and Rush remained healthy, so there were no opportunities for the young signal-caller.

Lance’s NFL stock value is at an all-time low and with potential free agency looming in 2025, he must revive his career.

Mike McCarthy has been impressed with Lance during the OTAs

Mike McCarthy has been giving Lance his fair share of the reps during the Cowboys’ OTAs and they have been impressed thus far.

His preseason challenge will be beating the reliable Cooper Rush in training camp and earning the right to be the priority support case for Prescott.

Furthermore, that would mean he would fill in for Prescott and have priority to start games if the 2023 MVP runner-up were to suffer an injury.

Although this will not guarantee him game time, the potential opportunities are what make this a crucial preseason on the horizon.

Lance has been unfortunate in his NFL career and is desperate to claw his way back into the frame in Dallas.

Lance cannot praise Dak Prescott and Jimmy Garoppolo enough for his growth

He spoke on The 8th Round podcast about the impact both Dak Prescott and former teammate Jimmy Garoppolo have had on his development.

“Both the teams I came into were both unique situations. I didn’t know how the current quarterback was going to respond to me being there… I’ve heard the horror stories of guys coming into a team and the quarterback isn’t excited about them being there,” Lance explained on the podcast.

“I’m unbelievably thankful to both of them (Prescott and Garoppolo) for treating me the way they did. [They] never withheld information, never not willing to spend extra time with me.

“I can’t say enough good things about either one of them. I can honestly say both of them have done an incredible job.”

Lance expressed nothing but gratitude for both Prescott and Garoppolo for always being helpful and giving up their valuable time for his development.

Furthermore, Lance highlighted how other players in the NFL would not be as forthcoming to assist him in his growth.

NFL Insider reveals the person Dak Prescott is within the franchise

Recently, NFL Insider Tom Pelisseo explained how the people associated with the franchise love Prescott and believe he is a true leader.

In addition, the coaching staff wants the three-time Pro Bowler to be the long-term quarterback for the Cowboys.

Both Lance and Prescott could be hitting free agency in 2025, as the latter could be playing on a contract year.
