Callum McGregor shares the Brendan Rodgers tactical insight Celtic needed after Ange Postecoglou

As the dust settles on another successful Celtic season, Bhoys heroes have been reflecting on the campaign as a whole and how it developed into a double.

Players and staff remained focused on their ambitions as the action unfolded as criticism and speculation swirled around them at times.

With the pressure now off they can speak candidly about the transition from Ange Postecoglou to Brendan Rodgers and how they set about their mission to win another two trophies.

For captain Callum McGregor, who was involved in discussions to bring the manager back to the club, Rodgers was the perfect candidate to take on the task after the exit of the Australian.

He’s spoken about the “tactical understanding” this group of players needed to develop further – something he feels is now more evident in the way the team are playing.

Callum McGregor on Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic impact

In a special season review programme on Sky Sports, McGregor said: “We’re a young exciting squad that probably needed that next level of guidance to get us to where we wanted to be. I thought the manager would be the perfect guy for that.

“Ange when he came in, he totally transformed the club overnight. The feeling of the place was buzzing. The football was great, fast attacking football with young exciting players as well.

“I just felt the next level for us was having that real tactical understanding of why we were doing things on the pitch. The manager is the best I’ve seen at it.

“The way he transformed our group the last time he came in – there was a real understanding of why we were doing certain things on the pitch, why we’re moving where we’re moving and really a bigger picture all the time about the game.

“I just thought this was going to be a perfect transition for what this group is. I think you can see now, the difference between when we attack and when we slow the game down to then speed it up again. That’s a big credit to the manager and his coaching staff as well.”

Celtic will benefit from a stable and constructive summer

Postecoglou’s exit from the club last year was far from ideal. Celtic were at a treble peak, riding high and the feeling amongst supporters was incredible.

That was pulled away from us and Rodgers was always going to have a pretty difficult task to build that back up.

Now, everyone is again moving forward with unity and that stability will help Celtic push on to new heights.

McGregor is making it clear the entire dressing room is firmly behind Rodgers’ methods and are keen to continue to learn from him. A calm pre-season and some clever transfer work could take the team up a level after the summer.
