Killing of 5 soldiers: CCTV cameras will help in tackling insecurity – COSEYL

The Coalition of Southeast Youth Leaders, COSEYL, has called on governors in the region to install Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV cameras in strategic places to curb criminal activities.

The coalition stated this in a statement issued on Monday by its President General, Goodluck Ibem.

According to Ibem, the cameras will assist security agencies to track criminal elements causing chaos in the region.

He noted that the assailants who killed about five soldiers after attacking a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State last week, would have been easily traced and apprehended if there were CCTV cameras.

He lamented that some security agents have been engaging in random arrest, regarding the unfortunate murder of the five soldiers.

The statement reads: “In this 21st century, we should be exploring modern technology for the protection of lives and properties.

“It is totally wrong for security agents to engage in massive arrest of citizens just in a bid to gather information about a crime committed. This practice has led to the arrest of innocent persons who are tortured for no just cause.

“We, therefore, call on Governor Otti and other South East governors to as a matter of urgency install CCTV cameras in order to assist security agencies perform their lawful duties effectively.”
