17-year-old Man Utd wonderkid makes first international start, starred against Euro 2024 side

One of Manchester United’s most promising young players has continued his international development.

James Scanlon has made an impact for Manchester United’s academy teams since being signed from Derby County in 2021.

This past season he was a key part of theunder-18s title winning team, and also figured for the under-21 side.

Scanlon scored eight goals in 12 league games, ending the season strongly with four goals in his last three matches, including a brace in a 9-1 demolition of Liverpool.

The teenager has also stood out because he has been making progress at international level for minnows Gibraltar.

James Scanlon makes first Gibraltar start

James Scanlon had been featuring for Gibraltar’s youth sides before being called up to the senior squad for their UEFA Nations League matches in March.

Scanlon made his full international debut against Lithuania, as a substitute, before another appearance from the bench days later against the same opponent.

While it is a little easier to break into the Gibraltar side than Brazil’s, it is still an achievement to make an international debut, and Scanlon followed this up yesterday with his first ever start.

Scanlon, 17, was named in Gibraltar’s starting line-up against Euro 2024 bound Scotland in a friendly.

The Manchester United prospect was up against Brighton’s Billy Gilmour and Aston Villa’s James McGinn in midfield, with Liverpool’s Andy Roberton in defence.

Gibraltar and Scanlon gave a good account of themselves, limiting Scotland to a 2-0 win, with the second goal coming late after he had been substituted.

The match was a great experience for the United teenager, who may be among those looking to try and make his mark in pre-season if granted an opportunity.

Scanlon recently signed professional deal

Manchester United recently moved to sign the attacking midfielder to a professional deal.

A week ago, Scanlon posted on social media: “Delighted to sign a professional contract @manchesterunited – Great way to end a successful season.”

His end to the season has just got better – with his first international start.

Gibraltar face Wales later this week, and he will be looking for another opportunity.
