Mason Moore describes emotions of getting the win as a local player

Mason Moore grew up an hour east outside of Lexington in Morehead, Kentucky. That’s why his contributions mean that much more on the mound for the Wildcats, specifically over the last two years for UK.

Moore spoke about what it feels like to help take Kentucky to a Super Regional in the NCAA Tournament following their 5-0 win over Indiana State. As an in-state player in the program, it’s an opportunity that he’s very thankful for.

“It means a lot,” Moore said. “I’m grateful that Coach Ming and the staff have put their faith in me to go out there and win us a game.”

“Being from the home state, I just want to go out there, give my best effort, and give our team the best chance to win,” said Moore.

Moore started against the Sycamores and was at the center of the shutout effort for Kentucky. In six innings of work overall, he allowed no runs, gave up just four hits in total, and struck out six with 106 pitches. That earned him his ninth victory of the season with his record now sitting at 9-3. It also made him one of seven Wildcats to make the All-Regional Team, including being one of two pitchers alongside Trey Pooser.

This was the latest postseason success for Moore after his performances last season. In two games in the previous Lexington Regional, he pitched 14.1 scoreless innings to get the pair of wins. That led him to making the All-Regional Team in that tournament as well.

This also was quite the outing for Moore considering his circumstances coming in. Moore was unable to come to the team’s second game on Saturday against Illinois due to an illness. He then spent the day on fluids, which got him better in time to perform on Sunday.

Moore has been a big part of a pair of postseasons over the last two years at Kentucky. It matters just a little more to him, though, as one of 10 players on the roster originally from the bluegrass.
