Mike White evaluates Texas’ defensive play

Texas has not given up a single run through three games in the Women’s College World Series. After the Longhorns’ 1-0 win over Stanford on Monday, UT head coach Mike White evaluated his team’s defensive efforts.

“Our defense gets a pretty bad knock, mainly because we get to a lot of balls. We make plays on balls. We don’t care about the errors,” White said. “We care about making the plays and making the outs. I think that’s the difference.

“There’s some teams — I’m not knocking anybody here — they don’t get the errors because they don’t get to the balls. But our kids are selling out. They’re learning what it is.”

Texas has only allowed three hits during its three-game run in the WCWS. In comparison, the Longhorns have committed two errors. Obviously, the team’s strategy is paying dividends.

Defensive success is nothing new for the team. Texas boasts 21 shutouts this season, the fourth-most in the country. For reference, the team has played 63 games. In simpler terms, the Longhorns have held their opponents scoreless in a third of their outings.

When Texas’ foes can find runs, they’re scarce. Texas has a jaw-dropping 1.89 ERA, the seventh-best in the nation. White is happy to have his team at the forefront of softball’s growing popularity.

“It’s great seeing this game elevate,” White said. “You’re seeing so many great plays. You look on SportsCenter, you see these great outfield plays going on, infield plays, people throwing from all angles. It’s dynamic right now. You’ve got to stay up with it. It’s pretty cool.”

On Wednesday, Texas will face off against the winner between Florida and Oklahoma in Game 1 of the WCWS Final at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
