Woman holds out in German treetop for 2.5 days amid flooding

A woman has been rescued after spending around two and a half days clinging to the branches of a tree to escape floodwater in Southern Germany.

The 32-year-old was finally discovered by a search drone on Tuesday afternoon, the police said.

She had been missing in the flooded Silberwald, or Silver Forest, near the Bavarian city of Neu-Ulm since Saturday night. The woman was said to be was uninjured but was weakened by her ordeal and was taken to hospital suffering from dehydration.

She had been walking in the forest late Saturday when water levels began to rise. At around midnight she called the fire and rescue service control centre on her mobile phone, said police spokesman Holger Stabik. An acquaintance of hers had also reported her missing to the police.

After that, the woman could no longer be reached on her phone, possibly due to a flat battery, and a search began.

After the emergency call, the woman managed to save herself by climbing into the branches of a tree, around 2 metres above the flood.

The water level was still about chest-high under the tree when the emergency services finally found her.
