The Texas Longhorns were able to put away the Stanford Cardinal in a 1-0 game where the only run was scored by Alyssa Washington. With that, the Longhorns advanced to the Women’s College World Series Final.
After the game, Washington walked through what happened on that game-winning run that she scored for the Longhorns.

“Yeah, I mean, at first my initial reaction was go,” Alyssa Washington said. “But then I saw like quick the pitcher had got it. I froze up a little bit. Instead of going back, I wanted to beat her, get into that rundown. What was going through my head was whatever it takes to score. I know in a ballgame like that, it takes one run to get ahead. It was going through my mind whatever it takes.”
The run came in the top of the seventh inning in what had been a pitcher’s duel for the ages. Alyssa Washington was able to get on base thanks to an error. From there, a double got her over to third base.
At that point, things got intense. Stanford played its infield in, ready for the bunt. When it came, Alyssa Washington got caught up in a rundown. Somehow, she managed to get out of it and made a break for home, beating the throw. She was ruled safe, which was upheld after being reviewed.
Despite both runners advancing to second and third after that rundown, it would be the only run Texas scored the entire game. Still, it was enough, with Texas starting pitcher Teagan Kavan dominating in a seven-inning shutout that saw her only allow one hit and one walk.
Mike White evaluates Texas’ defensive play
The Texas Longhorns have shut out their opponents in their first three Women’s College World Series games. Going back to the Austin Regional, the Longhorns have five shutouts this postseason. With all of that in mind, and with Texas heading to the WCWS Final, head coach Mike White evaluated the team’s defensive play.
“Our defense gets a pretty bad knock, mainly because we get to a lot of balls. We make plays on balls. We don’t care about the errors,” White said.
“We care about making the plays and making the outs. I think that’s the difference. There’s some teams — I’m not knocking anybody here — they don’t get the errors because they don’t get to the balls. But our kids are selling out. They’re learning what it is.”
