It wasn’t long ago that we covered that General Motors is looking into bringingplug-in hybrid vehicles to North America to assist in pushing towards electrification without forcing consumers to sacrifice the reliability of range and refueling just to have a vehicle that offers less emissions. With plug-in hybrids, that’s no longer a problem; you get the best of both worlds. For truck buyers, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are expected to be the first GM plug-in hybrid trucks the company will offer.
CEO Mary Barra recently told The Detroit News in an interview that GM hybrid trucks are expected to arrive in 2027. The company is timing its launches to help comply with federal regulations on emissions, something Ford has also opted to do with its products, pushing the launches back some to account for the demand or lack thereof. That means we should see the PHEV Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra arrive for the 2028 model year, likely becoming available for purchase in late 2027.
Despite EV sales passing 1 million units in 2023, data shows that the take rate for them has been slowing, which is why bringing in plug-in hybrids is an important step. Not only does it give consumers more options rather than forcing them to choose between an ICE truck and an electric one, but it also enables manufacturers to meet regulatory space, which has also changed recently and will likely change again as time goes on.
The arrival of GM plug-in hybrid truck options by 2027 shows that this business decision is very recent, as vehicle development programs tend to operate on a timeline of several years. However, considering that the vehicles need to be designed, engineered, and thoroughly tested, the timing is realistic. It’ll be nice for consumers to have options available when the PHEVs are released.
