'Wow': Steve Bruce says £16.5m player who he brought to Newcastle is one of the best he ever managed

Steve Bruce believes one of his former Newcastle United stars is one of the best players he ever managed.

The former Toon boss endured a difficult time at St James’ Park, struggling to get a tune out of a squad that was massively being held back by Mike Ashley. While Steve Bruce was not popular amongst Newcastle United fans, he certainly managed the club during a very challenging period.

But he did have some talented players at his disposal. Joelinton was his most expensive signing ever, and he has gone on to become a real superstar in black and white. However, that was not the case when Joelinton played under Bruce, back when he was a failing striker.

Bruce also had Joe Willock, who was absolutely outstanding for him, while he brought Callum Wilson to the club too.

They were excellent under Bruce, but they are not considered one of the best players ever managed by the 63-year-old.

Steve Bruce reflects on Allan Saint-Maximin’s ability

Instead, that honour goes to Allan Saint-Maximin.

Bruce appeared on TalkSPORT on Tuesday, and was asked by a caller to name the three best players he has managed during his career. He went with Christophe Dugarry and Jermaine Pennant, whilst also paying tribute to ASM.

“Saint-Maximin at Newcastle,” he said.

“Wow. What a talent this kid had. All of a sudden I’m watching somebody and thinking there’s not many people can do what he can do.

“A little bit off the charts in how he was, but certainly an individual talent. I’ve never really seen an individual talent like it. So Saint-Maximin has to be up there.”

Saint-Maximin was incredible at Newcastle under Bruce

The Bruce era was tough, but the biggest positive to come from it was probably Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman arrived at the club shortly after Bruce was named as Rafa Benitez’s replacement, costing £16.5million from Nice.

It quickly became clear that he was a maverick, and it was not long before he was Bruce’s talisman. He indulged Maxi, giving him the freedom to shine in a black and white shirt. Saint-Maximin was irresistible under Bruce, to the point that Newcastle had no way of playing without him.

Eddie Howe sold ASM last year

That was something that Eddie Howe rectified.

While Saint-Maximin still had a role to play under Howe, Newcastle knew how to win games without him.

In the end, the Magpies decided to cash in on Saint-Maximin. Howe was adamant that he wanted to keep him, but the club were forced to sell due to financial fair play, or profit and sustainability as it is now known.

Saint-Maximin left St James’ Park last summer, moving to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ahli. The 27-year-old made 30 league appearances for them this season, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists.

In truth, he is far too talented to be playing over there. He should still be in Europe, dazzling spectators with his ludicrous skill and speed.

It is no surprise that Bruce thinks he is one of the best he has ever worked with. They had a special connection on Tyneside, and it is nice to see Saint-Maximin recognised for his incredible natural ability.
