Shots fired at US embassy in Lebanon

Shots have been fired at the US embassy in Lebanon, the diplomatic mission reported on X on Wednesday.

"At 8:34 a.m. local time, small arms fire was reported in the vicinity of the entrance to the U.S. Embassy," the X post said.

It added that that "thanks to the quick reaction" of the Lebanese army and internal security team, "our facility and our team are safe." An investigation into the incident is under way, it said.

According to the Lebanese army, one suspected gunman was wounded, detained and taken to a hospital. He is said to be a Syrian citizen. There was initially no information on a motive for the attack.

Residents in the area told dpa that the shooting lasted about 15 minutes.

There were initially no reports of further casualties. The army cordoned off the area.
