Report: What Newcastle expect from their summer signings with possible surprise on the cards

The transfer window is still not officially open, yet it has been a frustrating start to the summer for Newcastle United.

While Lloyd Kelly appears to be on his way to St James’ Park, that is caveated by the fact that Chelsea have hijacked Newcastle’s move for Tosin Adarabioyo. He is now on his way to Stamford Bridge, despite the Magpies previously being confident of bringing him to Tyneside.

Away from that, fans are waiting patiently to see if Bruno Guimaraes remains at the club. His £100million release clause can be activated now, although no one has been tempted to do just that as of yet.

Then there is the goalkeeper situation, with Newcastle suddenly now more likely to bring in James Trafford compared to an established name like Aaron Ramsdale of Giorgi Mamardashvili.

He would be a fairly underwhelming arrival, and it remains unclear how Toon officials are going to generate some excitement in the transfer window.

How many summer signings Newcastle United want

Of course, it is still very early in the summer. Newcastle are yet to make any big moves, but they do appear to have big plans behind the scenes.

That is according to iNews, who have provided details on what the Magpies are planning to do with regards to new signings.

They claim that Newcastle want a bare minimum of four senior signings, as they eye a goalkeeper, a right winger, a backup striker and a right-sided centre-back. You have to imagine that is as well as Lloyd Kelly, as he is a left-footed defender.

What Newcastle expect from their summer signings

As well as the amount of signings Newcastle want, iNews have provided details of exactly what the Magpies are expecting from any new arrivals.

They have been told by a source that Newcastle want their signings to take them up another level.

The club want to keep progressing, and want players that are going to improve the squad. It is about quality, rather than depth.

Another Sandro Tonali style deal could happen

For Newcastle to go to another level in some positions, they will need to make a game-changing signing. The most interesting position they are targeting is right wing, as they Magpies go in search of an improvement on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.

At the moment, there is not a standout candidate. Jarrod Bowen and Michael Olise have been linked, but they will surely be too expensive.

Of course, there is every chance that Newcastle’s primary target is currently unknown outside the corridors of St James’ Park. A shock might even be on the cards, with iNews suggesting that a surprise signing in July is more likely than not, similar to the deal that saw Sandro Tonali arrive in 2023.

His move to Newcastle was pretty much out of nowhere. There had been tentative rumours about a transfer to Tyneside, but nothing concrete. Then suddenly the deal was on and Tonali became Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever.

A similar deal would be very exciting, as Toon officials work out how to take the club to the next level with their summer signings.
